A Powerful Lesson On Acceptance
Accepting life on life’s terms can be easier said than done, especially when it feels like everything around you is crumbling down. The power of acceptance can do amazing things in someone’s life, and even in sobriety, life is never perfect. We’re going to have good days and bad days, but it’s how we choose to deal with the bad days that matters. Accepting things that suck in our lives shows maturity, strength, and control in yourself. Recovery is based on acceptance and willingness, so accepting life on life’s terms is something that we all need to learn how to do; even though majority of the time it will be one of the hardest things we can ever do. Learning how to accept life as it comes can decrease anxiety and depression, and turn your day around in a split-second.
Accepting Life On Life’s Terms
There are many things in my life that I don’t like, mostly because I have no control over them happening. I have no power to change the crappy things that happen sometimes, but I can be accepting and choose to overcome these obstacles. Sometimes, I still get the feeling of wanting to give up and go back to what used to make me feel better when times got tough, but then I realize how stupid that would be. I’ve worked hard for my recovery, and something that temporarily sucks in my life doesn’t deserve me giving that up.
Accepting things that happen in our lives, especially when we least expect it, is tough, but knowing that things will always work out the way they are supposed to, could give you a little bit of relief. When we put our trust in a power greater than ourselves, it reminds us we are not in control of this world, or of what happens in it. The only thing we have control over is our thoughts and our actions. When we choose to accept situations and keep on moving forward, that is when you know that you’re on the path to acceptance, and accepting life on life’s terms. Real life happens, and “shit hits the fan” but by standing up when you get knocked down, you have a greater shot at growing stronger from them.
Accepting Recovery
When we choose to numb ourselves with drugs and alcohol to cope with situations that we don’t want to deal with, we are numbing ourselves from acceptance and feeling as well (which is the point to addicts). Addicts don’t like to face things, they like to run away and escape. I was one of those addicts who would try and escape from accepting things that I didn’t want to believe or feel, and would blame it on everyone around me. I played the victim role and manipulated myself out of every terrible situation that I had got myself in. When I came into a life of recovery, I learned that acceptance of not only terrible situations, but that my life was unmanageable from my addiction. I had to completely look at myself and make a change for the better in my life. I now look at things differently than I used to, seeing that things happen and life is not always flowers and butterflies. I have good days and bad days, buy by me accepting things and realizing that things are going to go how my higher power wants them to go makes me a stronger person in the end.
