Have you ever felt alone or hurt by something or someone and taking a pill made it all better? Addict Mentality. People who have the disease of addiction tend to think differently from other people, and behave differently too. Although this isn’t necessarily a “bad thing” it can still be dangerous to you or others around you. There are many ways to describe addict mentality, such as one of the popular terms, addictive personalities. What are these mindsets of addict mentality exactly?
Addict Mentality Mindsets
Listed below are the mindsets of this so-called addict mentality and how you can learn to change it in recovery from addiction.
Victim Mentality- Speaking from experience, I always played the victim role whenever I could, manipulating people into thinking that things were always everyone else’s fault instead of my own. Having people feel bad for me gave me attention, and it felt good to not be the bad guy all the time. I was filled with self-pity, so blaming others and playing the victim was so much easier for me, and quite frankly, it went without thought.
Consumer Mentality- When I was getting high, I had a bad consumer mentality. When I saw something, I wanted it and I was going to get it. Whether it was me being a clepto, or my mind simply just obsessing over it until I got it, I didn’t stop until I got whatever it was that I wanted. There’s the phrase: “I’m an addict. I want what I want when I want it.” That’s exactly how it was; I let impulsivity control my mind.
Entitlement Mentality- When I was getting high, my addict mentality was that I deserved everything, although I didn’t realize my ego at that time. When I got into recovery, I realized how big my ego was, thinking that the world revolved around me. I didn’t care about other people’s feelings or how my actions would affect others, because “I deserved it.”
Rebellious Mentality- I used to thrive off of excitement, adrenaline, and danger; basically I thought I was a badass, when I wasn’t. The entitlement and consumer mentality played a major role in this mentality, due to me thinking I deserved everything and that I was invincible; I wouldn’t ever get caught. All the things I stole and bad things I did, it gave me an adrenaline rush, and never once did I stop to think of how it would affect the people I was doing it to; it was plain selfishness.
Perishing Mentality- In simpler terms, I had an enormous lack of gratitude when I had active addict mentality. I always thought in my head, “why does this have to happen to me?” “I deserve better than this.” Again, I was filled with self-pity and spent too many thoughts on what I didn’t have, instead of on what I did have. I ostracized myself into thinking this way, although I didn’t realize it at the time.
Addict Mentality: There’s A Pill For That
With all those addict mentality mindsets, I couldn’t help myself but to get high. If I was feeling sorry for myself, or upset, or even happy for that matter, I would take a pill for it. When I was getting high, pills made me feel like I was pretty; like I was good enough; like I was worth it; like I could go to the grocery store; like I could have anything I wanted. That is plain addict mentality in the flesh. In reality, no pill is going to fix anything when you abuse it; I’ve learned that drugs made my life a living hell. Not only did I mess my life up big time, but it took a toll on my physical health and appearance. I thought I looked so good, but looking back, I looked like a sick person. I was a sick person. But today I don’t have to take a pill to feel pretty or to feel good enough, because recovery has given me my self worth back. I wake up everyday with gratitude for what I have, and I don’t have to take any substance to give me that. Although today I’m grateful for all the things I’ve put myself through, I’m even more grateful that I gave recovery a shot.
