Am I An Alcoholic Or Do I Just “Over-Drink”?

am i an alcoholic

Do you ever ask yourself “Am I an alcoholic?” It can be pretty difficult finding the true answer to whether you’re an alcoholic or not, especially when denial is always a dominate factor when it comes to asking this important question. The disease of alcoholism can take a major toll on your life, not to mention your physical health and well being. No matter who it is, an alcoholic will always suffer some type of personal bottom, no matter what it may be. It can be a physical bottom (such as losing your job, your house, your car, something valuable) or it can be an emotional bottom (such as losing yourself, losing your supports and your family, not being able to look at yourself in the mirror, etc). So, are you an alcoholic or do you just overdrink?

Am I An Alcoholic?

The question remains for you, and listed below may hold the answers to whether you are or not. Just like there is signs for addiction, there are also signs for alcoholism, and essentially they’re the same disease at the end of the day. Though the signs of alcoholism are listed below, there are also stages of alcoholism that we encourage you read as well.

  • You spend a lot of time drinking and recovering from your drinking.
  • You cannot seem to control your drinking, or quit drinking once you’ve started.
  • You cannot seem to stop drinking on your own.
  • You suffer from withdrawal symptoms when you’re not drinking.
  • You have given up things so that you can drink (job, family, activities, etc).
  • When you wake up, your first thought is drinking.
  • You find yourself drinking before noon.
  • You find yourself drinking alone.
  • Alcohol related arrests (such as DUI, OVI, public intoxications, physical altercations, etc).
  • Your behavior has changed drastically, especially when you drink.
  • You have a family history of alcoholism.
  • You find yourself craving alcohol.
  • You’ve gotten alcohol poisoning more than once.
  • You have built a tolerance to alcohol, finding yourself having to drink more and more.
  • You have tried to quit drinking on your own, but have failed.
  • You have found yourself looking up ways to quit drinking.
  • You have asked yourself, “Am I an alcoholic?”

All of these listed above do pretty well at describing an alcoholic to the tee. Being an alcoholic myself, I can personally relate to every single one of these. I, too, have asked myself, “Am I an alcoholic?” I couldn’t accept that I was an alcoholic at such a young age, especially because my only problem was with pills (so I thought). So of course, my stubborn alcoholic-self had to beat my head against the wall and learn the hard way that although I had a major pill problem, it turns out I had a problem with alcohol too. And it’s not just about how I drank, but it’s the way I acted and how I thought when I drank. My brain is wired differently than someone who doesn’t have this disease of alcoholism and addiction; I can’t have just one drink. I saw I had a problem, and I sought help for this problem through treatment and a 12-step fellowship.
