Selfies That Lead to Arrests

The technology that we hold in our hands today is truly mind boggling. If you own a smart phone you are in possession of something with more processing power than the computer that NASA used to put man on the moon. Many people use this amazing technology to do some painfully moronic things. With “selfies” (pictures taken of oneself for really no reason besides to feed one’s narcissism) being all the rage now -a-days it’s not surprising that some people are taking some stupid pictures. Uncle Ben said “With great power comes great responsibility.” With so many selfies that lead to arrests making headlines recently one can only wish that more people would’ve taken Spiderman’s deceased uncle’s advice.

Let’s travel all the way to Europe to find one of the most recent high profile cases of insane stupidity. A west London drugs gang are facing prison sentences after several members bragged about their drug selling operation. They posted multiple photos of themselves on social media sites showing off their large quantities of drugs and cash.

One of the dealers, Sophian Chhayra, a 24 year old male, smiled as he posed with a massive bag filled with weed. Other gang member Zakaria Chentouf, also a 24 year old male, had a similar picture but with a heaping pile of cash. They posted these pictures to show how amazingly successful their lives had become and believe it or not the police saw these pictures that lead to an investigation.

In September 5 men in total confessed to crimes related to the photos posted. Police busted the drug ring in May during a crackdown on gang-related youth violence and drug dealing. Tens of thousands of dollars in cash was seized as well as pounds and pounds of more illegal drugs following the search.

Back in the United States we find another impressively stupid young man in Florida, the Sunshine State. Back in May of this year Taylor Harrison of Port St Lucie posted pictures on Facebook bragging about his lavish lifestyle as a drug dealer. Harrison even posted a photo of him selling drugs with a cop car next to him while bragging about how easy it was to sell drugs even in front of cops. I know what you’re thinking, “How did they catch such a ruthless bad boy?”

He pretty much did an open and shut case for the sherrif’s department. They saw the photos, which lead to an easy arrest in which Taylor was found with drugs on his person. Well the police re-posted the photos that he so proudly displayed on his Facebook saying “Since Taylor was kind of enough to share photos of us on his Facebook page, we thought we would share these photos of Taylor on our page. Taylor’s bond is $55,500.” This can’t help but make you feel a little happy inside.

Look guys, I know this article was pretty opinionated which really isn’t Recovery Society’s style but let’s be a little smarter as a society. First off don’t sell drugs, but if you are going to please post pictures of yourself on social media so the cops can get you off the streets.
