But now that I have found recovery from addiction, I have looked at myself and my actions in the past, and I seriously wish someone would have intervened on me sooner. Living, no EXISTING, while struggling with something such as addiction, is absolutely no way to live, and I wouldn’t wish that empty feeling on my worst enemy. It comes to the point where you don’t want to die, but you don’t want to live either; you feel as if you’re empty inside and there’s no possible way to get out of the deep, dark hole of addiction. Addiction is a disease, not a choice, and although we don’t make the best decisions, we literally cannot help it. I now know today that there IS a way out, which why I would like to present to you some life tips on beating this stupid addiction and finding a better life in recovery.

Life Tips On Beating Addiction

A while back, I came across this poem about addiction (click the link to read). As I started reading it, some feeling of which I still cannot explain, came over me; this was ME and MY addiction. It explained my life in active addiction perfectly, to the tee! I did not want to live that way anymore, I knew that then and there, so I followed the suggestions that were given to me while in treatment.

Life Tips On Overcoming Addiction

1) Ask for help: asking for help is something I never wanted to do; I was either too scared of people finding out who I truly was, or scared that I was going to get into trouble and be a disappointment. I didn’t ask for help, and let myself get bad enough to where it was either me going to treatment, or me going to jail.

2) Go to treatment: So I chose treatment; which others called rehab. When I thought of the word rehab, I thought of criminals and things that I saw in movies. I didn’t think I needed to be in a rehab, but it was completely different than what movies portrayed it as. Trust me, just try it. There are tons of great treatment centers all over the US, and some are lucky enough to be inside Recovery Communities.

3) Follow the suggestions: In treatment, they kept telling me things I should do that will guarantee me to get a better life, but at the time, it seemed like too much work. In reality, they were the greatest things I’ve ever done in my life. The suggestions are as followed:

4) Attend meetings, preferably 90 in 90 in you’re serious: Going to meetings are the coolest things ever; you’re surrounded by loving people who understand exactly what you’re dealing with, and they don’t judge you for it.

5) Get a sponsor: No, they don’t give you free stuff. A sponsor guides you through the twelve steps.

6) Work the 12 steps: I was told that if I work the twelve steps, I was guaranteed a spiritual awakening, and they were completely, 100% right.

7) Help others: After I completed the twelve steps, I began helping others do the same.

8) Don’t pick up a drink or a drug, no matter what: I still haven’t picked up a drink or a drug yet, but I know to remain humble and to not get cocky on my program of recovery. We have a disease that tells us we don’t have a disease; think about it.

Life Tips On Living In Recovery

In order to live in recovery, it’s highly suggested that you follow the life tips listed above. They not only worked for me, but for MILLIONS of other recovering addicts and alcoholics around the world. At first, I thought I was different and that I could get clean and sober on my own, and tried it four different times. After I was tired of beating my head against the wall, time and time again, I figured my way didn’t work, so “let’s try their way so I can prove them wrong and that it won’t work for me, then they’ll leave me alone.” Well, it worked, just like they said, and I have a life beyond my wildest dreams today, and all I had to do was do a little work that was suggested to me.
