The road to recovery is much more rewarding that you would think. Can you imagine a world where you didn’t have to wake up and put some sort of substance in your body just to “feel normal?” When people are stuck so far deep into their addictions, they sometimes feel as if there is no other way to live or even a way out for that matter. Well, there is a way out; all you have to do is ask for help. Jumping on the road to recovery is a gift that you will never want to give back once you start to experience all of the rewards that come along with it.
Road To Recovery: It’s A Journey, Not A Destination
In a program of recovery, they tell you about these “promises” that supposedly happen sooner or later after staying clean and sober and working the program. Listed below are the promises of a program of recovery, and what they really mean.
1. If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through (hope instead of despair)
2. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. (finally starting to feel free from drugs and alcohol)
3. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. (we will begin to understand our past instead of regret it)
4. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. (you will feel peace instead of chaos)
5. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. (we can start helping others get on the road to recovery)
6. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. (you will begin to love yourself)
7. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. (you’ll start to care about others and not just yourself)
8. Self-seeking will slip away. (no more guilt)
9. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. (you will look forward to each day being clean and sober)
10. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. (you will begin to accept things in life)
11. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. (you can handle things in a calm, mature manner)
12. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves (things will always work out the way they are supposed to work out)
These promises are guaranteed, but some people who are on the road to recovery may get them quicker than others; but ultimately, they will always come if you work for them.
