“I Got A Gift Of Life And A Second Chance.”
I was a mess; I was convinced that life as I knew it was gone. I couldn’t even look myself in the mirror. I was surrounded by rolled up dollar bills and leftover residue that I had literally licked off the table. This was my life, this is who I turned into. I had no one to call, no one to call a friend, other than a drug dealer who made me do things that I had no choice in doing. I needed the pills, NEEDED them. I feared withdrawal so much that I did terrible things to myself and the people around me who once knew me as a girl who had such a bright future ahead of her. That girl was gone, a junkie who gave up everything for a tiny, blue pill that costed more than a full tank of gas.
I ostracized myself from everyone around me; my own parents and siblings had no idea who I was, or where I was for that matter. Hell, sometimes I didn’t even know. I sold everything I had, and even my families valuables, to support my habit to something that kept me from getting shaky and sick. At this point, I was lucky enough to have a roof over my head and a bed to sleep in. I had nothing to call my own, except for a habit that I once thought I could stop, at anytime. I began begging to someone I had once called My God to be able to quit and have a “normal life” again.
My prayers were soon answered when people around me and even police officers began suspecting something was going on with me. The things I originally thought I borrowed to get money, their absence started getting noticed. Authorities were called and I was a suspect. I denied and denied for the fear of going to jail and breaking people’s hearts, but apparently at this point, I even looked like a drug addict (I hadn’t even admitted that to myself yet). I was caught, but in my mind I was grateful because I was so beyond ready to be done with it all. I contemplated suicide quite a few times, but was too big of a coward to ever go through with it. I was given the option of jail or treatment.
Looking back at it all, I was definitely given the gift of life. I chose treatment over jail of course, and it was a long, hard road. I now have 5 months clean and sober, have been given the gift of life and am getting so many things that I lost back. My mother and father call me a daughter once again. My little brother and old sister say that they’re proud of me, and no one knows how great of a feeling that is. For so long, I was not only distant from them, but I was a ghost. I was neither living or dead, I was simply existing and getting by day to day with the help of these little, blue pills. I’m feeling better than I have in 24 years of living. I am so grateful for my mom calling Recovery Society and giving me the gift of life that I never even knew was possible. Don’t let yourself get in the way of the happiness you deserve.
