I Think I Have A Coffee Addiction

coffee addiction

Hey guys, my name is Chelsea, I’m the Marketing Director for this company and I need to get your guys’ advice on this issue. I think I have a coffee addiction, and although it seems silly, this is a serious blog. For the past two years now, I’ve NEEDED a coffee as soon as I wake up, and not just any coffee, I prefer a latte from Starbucks. In this article I’m basically “telling on myself.”

Facts About Coffee Addiction

Well, I’ve been ignoring this issue for quite some time, thinking I deserved a morning coffee, but it’s come to the point where I’ve said to myself, “This is how I get my calcium, they put 2% milk in my lattes.” I’m just now realizing that that is sick thinking; I’m a girl who doesn’t like milk by itself, but I’m rationalizing it so I can continue to drink coffee. I’ve read that coffee addiction is just plain ol’ caffeine addiction, and caffeine is the third most addictive substance in the world (nicotine is the first, heroin is second). Sadly enough, I’m addicted to nicotine as well, and like to enjoy a coffee and nicotine at the same time.

What I’ve read about coffee addiction and caffeine addiction is actually quite terrifying: when you drink coffee daily, the coffee can compound the toxic substances in the body that increase risk of insomnia, stroke and heart disease! What?! Regular ingestion of coffee or caffeine in general alters your brain’s chemical makeup, leading to nausea, fatigue, and headaches when trying to quit (which is known as the famous caffeine withdrawal headache). I feel like coffee helps me work better throughout my work day, but knowing these effects that caffeine has, makes me second think my problem.

How To Quit Caffeine

I got these suggestions on how to overcome my coffee addiction from WikiHow:

Step One: Write down your reasons for quitting your coffee addiction

Step Two: Put the list of reasons somewhere where you will always see it

Step Three: Have the willingness and believe that it is possible

Step Four: Try replacing the coffee with green tea

Step Five: Drink a lot of water to flush out the toxins

Step Seven: Calculate how much money and time spent on coffee

Step Eight: Wean yourself down, with support by your side

Step Nine: Allow time for rest and rejuvenation

Step Ten: start exercising and get active

We’ve all got our addictions, I’ve overcome the drugs and alcohol, but now I’m seeing my issue with coffee. Some people are unfortunately still out there using drugs, but they don’t have to be; there is a better way.
