Fall Is Officially “Rehab Season”

Fall officially marks the start of Rehab Season, where everyone who is struggling decides it’s time to get help. When I worked in treatment down in South Florida, it was always the same, like clock-work: during the summer, there was always a lower amount of patients then there was in Fall and Winter. So I was told that the start of Fall was the start of the so-called “rehab season.” I thought it was silly, because they made it seem like it was the busy season for restaurants, but it began to make sense. In Rehab Season, the number of patients in the treatment center continued to increase, and during the summer, it felt as if there was no one there.

What Is Rehab Season?

Rehab Season is quite a strange way to put it, especially when getting treatment for your addiction is no joke, it’s life or death. Getting treatment has saved many lives from the dangers of this disease, so why would people make a joke out of it by calling Fall “rehab season?” I don’t think it’s meant to be a joke, but more of a phrase used in some treatment centers throughout the country. During the summer, it seems as if many people just aren’t ready to get help for themselves just yet, and I don’t blame them. Who wants to miss out on their summer by going to rehab? In reality, rehab is there for those who are struggling with substance abuse or other addiction issues, and waiting to go can only make matters worse in the long run. So when the summer is finally over and reality sets in, many people come to terms with their problems and decide that it’s time to get help for themselves, which is amazing. This disease of addiction is no joke and wants to take lives away from families who care.

Benefits of Addiction Treatment

There are many negative thoughts towards going to addiction treatment; such as people thinking it’s for criminals, that addiction treatment is too expensive, that it’s unnecessary, that it’s a scam, that it’s for mental people, and many other things. Addiction treatment is completely different than how Hollywood portrays it in the movies or in TV shows; they make treatment seem like a mental institution, but in reality, many resemble resorts and hotels (like some of the treatments down in South Florida). There are actually many benefits that come along from addiction treatment, such as:

  • Being medically observed during your drug or alcohol detoxification
  • Having one-on-one therapy
  • Seeing a psychiatrist every day for daily check ups
  • Seeing a physician every day for daily check ups
  • Getting your life back from addiction
  • Being introduced to a life of recovery from addiction
  • Being able to mend bridges that you’ve burned in life
  • Learning about your disease of addiction
  • Meeting and making life-long friends
  • Getting your family back
  • A guaranteed life change for the better
  • Getting away from stressful environments
  • You can consider it a mini vacation to better your life

South Florida has a huge recovery community, with many different treatment options to choose from.
