Monday night was Recovery Society’s first annual Candle Light Vigil and was held at Victory Park in Pickerington, Ohio. The candle light vigil was remarkably beautiful, and we at Recovery Society plan on having one next year, and the following years to come. The message that was spread when getting the world out for the candle light vigil was to basically spread hope to those who have lost loved one’s to this disease of addiction. Although they may be gone, they are never forgotten.

Recovery Society was asked to speak to NBC 4, by their very own Katie Love, in Columbus on Monday in Schiller Park in German Village to address the painkiller addiction epidemic, and our very own Chelsea Mee shared her experience, strength, and hope on the issue. Chelsea has been sober over 2 years, since September 10th, 2012. As you can see in the video above, painkiller addiction is a major problem in the state of Ohio, and through out the country. Studies showed that more than 1,900 Ohioans died from a drug related death back in 2012. Also, it’s been found that painkiller addiction in the state of Ohio is up 28% from 2012, which is twice as many than 2008. The NBC 4 news story was the top story, also letting people know of Recovery Society’s candle light vigil that was held on Monday night in Pickerington.

The candle light vigil last night started at 7:45 pm, and people came to honor those who they have lost from the disease of addiction. Family members of the lives that have been lost brought Christmas ornaments with their names on them to hang on the memorial tree. Everyone gathered in a circle, with their candles lit, and spoke their peace on the disease and what it can do, how powerful it is, and what we need to continue to do to prevent deaths from addiction from happening: awareness and speaking out. A few members from Tyler’s Light, a non-profit organization that was created after Tyler Cambell (Pickerington graduate) died from an accidental overdose, also came out to the candle light vigil to show their love and support for the lives that they’ve lost to this disease.

Addiction Awareness And Getting Help

The disease of addiction is powerful and insidious, and can and will take many more lives unfortunately. By spreading awareness and speaking up about this disease, if we can all save at least one life from addiction, it’s better than none. Statistically, 100 people in America a day die from a drug overdose. Many people don’t understand that there is help available and there is a better life waiting for them. By getting help and beating this disease of addiction, it not only saves your life, but spreads a message of hope to someone else watching from the side lines. Every time someone gets clean and sober, it shows someone else that it’s possible. By continuing to fight for our lives and spreading awareness, the number of daily overdoses can hopefully start to go down, causing lives to be saved and preventing families from heartache.
